ERC Holds 2023 Annual Report Meeting

In accordance with the Energy Law, the Energy Regulatory Commission has presented the 2023 operational work report and budget performance to energy licensees. The report meeting saw participation from 240 employees representing 177 licensed energy companies.

In 2023, Mongolia's electricity production reached 8.5 billion kWh, marking an increase of 0.3 billion kWh or 4.3 percent compared to the previous year. Of the total electricity produced, thermal power plants contributed 90.9 percent, solar and wind sources 8.5 percent, hydroelectric power plants 0.6 percent, and diesel plants 0.01 percent. Additionally, Mongolia imported 2.4 billion kWh of electricity, up by 0.3 billion kWh or 13.2 percent from the previous year.

The peak load of the energy system during the winter of 2023-2024 rose by 11.3 percent from the previous year, reaching 1,636 MW. Both thermal power plants and renewable energy generators operated at full capacity without reserve equipment to meet this demand.

To better serve consumers, the Energy Regulatory Commission updated the "Regulations of Business Relations on Licensing" in accordance with the Law on Licensing. To mitigate peak load in the central region, the Minister of Energy approved a comprehensive plan for "Demand Management" measures, organizing relevant working groups. As part of this initiative, the social impact campaign "SAVE ELECTRICITY 17:00-22:00" was jointly implemented. Additionally, efforts were made to introduce a unified online system for registering and controlling energy users' suggestions and complaints.
