Operational highlights of Mongolia's Energy Sector

In 2018, Mongolia’s electricity production has reached a volume of 6,624.8 million kWh, an increase of 8.8% compared to the previous year’s production. 93% of total electricity was produced by thermal power plants, 6% by solar and wind, 1% by hydro power sources, and 0.06% by diesel generators. Total heat energy production has been reached a volume of 9,425.1 thousand Gcal, an increase of 5% or 448.5 thousand Gcal, compared to the previous year.

During the year, 1,683.6 million kWh of electricity has been imported making an increase of 161.2 million kWh or 10.6% compared to the previous year.

CENTRAL REGION INTEGRATED POWER GRID (CRIPG) produced 6,300.3 million kWh of electricity and distributed 5,699.0 million kWh, an increase by 678.5 million kWh or 13.5% compared to the previous year. CRIPG also produced 8,236.8 thousand Gcal of heat energy, an increase by 385.4 thousand Gcal or 4.9% compared to the previous year.

WESTERN REGION INTEGRATED POWER GRID’s (WRIPG) electricity consumption totaled 163.2 million kWh, which is an increase by 5.6% (8.7 million kWh) compared to previous year. 28.2% of total demand was supplied by Durgun Hydro station, 71.8% through imports from Russia and China.

EASTERN REGION INTEGRATED POWER GRID’s (ERIPG) electricity consumption has increased by 0.84% (2.1 million kWh) in 2018. DorCHPP produced 230.5 million kWh of electricity and distributed 199.4 million kWh of electricity and 273.4 thousand Gcal of heat energy. Compared to 2017, there was 0.7% increase in electricity and 1.5% in heat distribution.

ALTAI-ULIASTAI INTEGRATED POWER GRID's (AUIPG) Total demand in 2018 was 75.7 million kWh, an increase by 7.9% (5.5 million kWh) compared to the previous year. 36.4 million kWh electricity was purchased from CRIPG an increase by 34.0% (9.2 million kWh) compared to the previous year, and the electricity production from renewable energy sources and diesel generators reached 36.4 million kWh an increase of 8.3% (3.3 million kWh). The electricity purchase from WRIPG totaled 2.8 million kWh a decrease by 12.6% compared to 2017.

Own electricity consumption of CRIPG’s CHPPs increased by 0.2 units to 13.83%, whereas DorCHPPs own consumption decreased by 0.1 units to 13.46 %.

CRIPG’s transmission and distribution losses decreased by 0.8 units to 13.93%, whereas the ERIPG’s losses increased by 0.1 unit to 4.2% compared to the previous year. The transmission and distribution losses of WRIPG and AUIPG are decreased by 1.17 units to 24.8% and 0.87 units to 22.53% respectively.

The 135 designated consumers used 288.2 thousand Gcal heat and 3,308.99 million kWh electricity in 2018. There are 151 energy managers, 82 energy auditors and 10 accredited energy service companies at the energy efficiency service market. Energy audits were performed at 60 designated consumers.
