MONGOLIA'S ENERGY REGULATORS AND NARUC PARTNER TO EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE

          The Energy Regulatory Commission of Mongolia (ERC) and the National Association of Energy Regulatory Utility Commissions (NARUC) have been working together in a regulatory partnership supported by the Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) under the United States Department of State. The aim of this cooperation is to strengthen the capacity of energy regulation in Mongolia and to contribute to the development of a stable, efficient, transparent, and competitive energy sector.

          As part of this partnership, a seminar was held on January 18th for the exchange of experience between NARUC and ERC. The seminar was attended by officials and experts from the ERC, Ministry of Energy (MoE), National Dispatching Center (NDC), National Power Transmission Grid (NPTG), and Ulaanbaatar Electricity Distribution Network (UBEDN). During the seminar, presentations and discussions were held on topics such as Mongolia's power grid renovation, distributed generation, integrated resource planning, and North American and Hawaii power grid renovation strategies.

        The seminar is an important contribution to the energy sector partnership between the two countries, enabling the sharing of knowledge and recommendations to improve the regulation of the electricity and energy sector in Mongolia, and to achieve the goals and objectives set forth in the field of energy. The Mongolian government has set a goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in total energy production to 20% by 2023 and 30% by 2030, in line with its NDC submitted as part of the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.

         To achieve these goals, it is essential for Mongolia to create and renovate a power grid that is resistant to unexpected risks and difficulties and capable of overcoming the challenges of the new century. Grid modernization will make it easier and more convenient to connect renewable energy sources to the grid, an important tool in the fight against climate change.
