ERC and NARUC Host Workshop on Competitive Wholesale Electricity Market Strategy

The Energy Regulatory Commission of Mongolia (ERC) and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) are jointly organizing a workshop on "Competitive Wholesale Electricity Market Establishment Strategy" from May 27-29.

This partnership between ERC and NARUC aims to facilitate Mongolia's transition to a competitive wholesale energy market and improve regulatory oversight. The international cooperation is focused on identifying the stages of market development, establishing necessary mechanisms, understanding the role and motivations of market participants, and devising a strategic plan.

Currently, Mongolia operates under the Single Buyer Model (SBM) energy market, managed by the National Dispatch Center (NDC). The NDC purchases electricity from power plants and imports it, then sells it to electricity distribution companies.

Transitioning from the Single Buyer Model to a competitive wholesale market is crucial for attracting investors, increasing production, and creating a tariff system that reflects actual costs.
