The Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), E. Tuvshinchuluun, along with relevant officials, recently met with a delegation led by Kimberly Harrington, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Energy Resources.
In the meeting, the parties reviewed previous projects carried out in partnership with the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and explored a potential framework for future collaboration. U.S. representatives expressed their support for Mongolia’s ongoing energy sector reforms, with optimism for positive developments in the near future. Key topics included the establishment of a competitive wholesale energy market in Mongolia, the expansion of distributed generation, and other areas for enhanced cooperation.
Previously, the Energy Regulatory Commission of Mongolia, in collaboration with NARUC, conducted a peer review to develop strategies for establishing a competitive wholesale electricity market, including discussions with industry experts.
The delegation also shared international best practices for increasing the adoption of small-scale energy sources, such as distributed generation, rooftop solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage. Topics covered included regulatory approaches in the United States and other countries, focusing on tariff policy, regulatory frameworks, and rules for distributed energy generation.
